AHOY! Check out the Details for Beach Bash at Lost Worlds in Support of Big Day at the Lake with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolina

On April 28th, we’re closing the brewery at 5pm to host a very important event in our community – Beach Bash 2023! The event will raise funds for Big Day at the Lake for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolina. We sat down with Brent Sparks, Chair of the event, to learn more and encourage your participation.

Tell us about the history of Big Day at the Lake? What was the goal when BBBS first organized the event?

In 2004, Dave Yochum, working with the local Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas (BBBSCC) office, organized a group of volunteers and invited all of the Bigs and Littles to enjoy a day of fun, including boating, fishing, tubing, and swimming on Lake Norman. Children who would not normally have the opportunity to partake in these activities had an opportunity for a wonderful day of fun and experiences. Dave enlisted many of his neighbors and community leaders to serve as boat hosts and volunteers, so this vision could become a reality. The Big Day at the Lake event culminated that first day with a huge picnic made possible by donations from local companies such as Duke Energy.  Now in its 19th year, Big Day at the Lake has not only continued to provide this annual opportunity for everyone to gather, but has grown into a reliable source of fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

What would you like people to know about the Beach Bash?

Our upcoming event was created as a way for the local community to gather and support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas.  Through a partnership with Lost Worlds Brewing, we have pulled together an amazing evening of fun and fundraising. From unlimited drinks and food, to the opportunity to participate in our silent and live auctions, we can assure you a great time for a great cause. The funds from your ticket purchase and all of our auction proceeds, we'll go directly to supporting events and programs for children in the community.

Can you tell us about Big Day at the Lake?

On July 22nd of this year, Bigs and Littles will meet their assigned boat host at a location on the lake where they can begin their morning of fun on the water. Everyone will have the opportunity to explore the lake and participate in every activity imaginable, including several locations where boats will gather together and children can swim as a group. At the conclusion of the morning everyone will head over to the Duke Energy Explorium for an afternoon picnic. With donations and support from the local community, we're able to provide an amazing cookout and tons of activities from slides to music to ice cream to sports.

What does this event mean to you, personally?

I started my connection with Big Brothers Big Sisters through Big Day at the Lake more than 10 years ago as a picnic volunteer.  Over the years I've had the opportunity to become more involved with this event as well as the wider organization and I am amazed year after year at the impact we are having on children in our community. This event especially, brings together a wonderful group of people for a great day and seeing how much fun all of the Bigs and Littles have, reminds me how important this day is.

How does the event at Lost Worlds help raise money for the organization?

Big Day at the Lake provides a dependable portion of the annual budget.  Your ticket purchase and participation in our auctions will help raise much needed funds that will provide programs and support for Matches across the area. BBBSCC helps children realize their potential and build their futures, while nurturing children and strengthening communities. We couldn’t do any of it without you!
