This print is a rubbing made from Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Angkor Wat is the largest religious structure in the world. Originally constructed as a Hindu Temple and dedicated to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire. It eventually became a Buddhist Temple. Angkor Wat was built over 28 years from 1122 to 1150 CE during the reign of Suryavarman II. The temple is adorned with inscriptions and carvings depicting religious events, royal activities, and everyday activities. The temple is a symbol of Cambodia and is a source of national pride.
The print depicts musicians playing in a royal court. The hat exhibited here comes from a member of the Cambodian army and dates to the period around the Vietnam War.
