Adventure Series: Exploring Boehm's Trident Pale Ale
The Story
Born in Brooklyn, Roy Boehm enlisted in the United States Navy in 1941 at the age of 17 and fought in the Pacific Theater throughout World War II. Boehm specialized in deep sea diving, search & recovery, supplying guerillas in the Philippines, and under water demolition. With the conclusion of WWII, Boehm reenlisted and saw action in the Korean conflict including in support of the Inchon invasion. In 1960, Boehm was asked to develop, design, and implement a new commando organization known as the SEALs. He became the first Officer in Charge (OIC) of Seal Team Two. During his time as OIC, he was responsible for expanding the training and focus of the SEALs to include parachuting, lockpicking, hotwiring cars, photography, and sailing – building a military unit with diverse capabilities.
When a soldier becomes a SEAL, they are awarded a special warfare insignia known as the “SEAL Trident.” This special insignia consists of a golden eagle clutching a US Navy anchor, a trident, and a flintlock style pistol. It is one of the most recognizable insignias in the US Navy. A SEAL’s Trident can be taken away if a commander loses faith and confidence in the service member.
The Discovery
Boehm’s Trident Pale Ale is a classic American Pale Ale with a twist. We single hopped this beer with Trident, a novel hop blend that delivers a smooth flavor and aroma of citrus, fruit, passionfruit, and other tropical notes. Throw on top of it a special yeast strain that accentuates the hop flavor, and you have Boehm’s Trident.
