Krakatoa Smoked Amber

The Story

On the days of August 26th and 27th in 1883, Krakatoa erupted creating a volcanic event among the most violent in recorded history. Located between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, the eruption could be heard in Mauritius nearly 3000 miles away and killed at least 36,417 people (although sources estimate it may have been more than 120,000). Offshore, the Gouverneur General Loudon, a Dutch mail steamer, watched the eruption. Captain Johan Lindemann only saved the ship by steering it into the subsequent tsunami caused by Krakatoa and directed the crew to continually shovel the ash off the deck to maintain the boat’s stability. Lindemann’s diary records many observations from the 1883 Krakatoa eruption… a black cloud racing towards their ship, black ash falling onto the boat in six-inch layers, and the eventual calm of the reddish-brown sky.

The Discovery

Krakatoa Smoked Amber Ale is a traditional Amber Ale with a twist – the addition of Cherrywood smoked malt. The resulting brew has a reddish hue, a medium bodied backbone, and a delicious hint of smokey flavor. Krakatoa is a beer to be savored while taking in the beauty of the world – much as Captain Lindemann did in the aftermath of the Krakatoa eruption.
