Morleys Hefeweizen Ale

The Story

Sylvanus Morley was an American archaeologist and epigrapher. Morley’s passion was the pre-Columbian Maya civilization and he conducted extensive excavations of Chichen Itza and published major studies on Maya hieroglyphic writing. But Morley was more than just an archaeologist as later research on his life uncovered.

 During World War One, tensions were high between Mexico and the United States resulting in several border skirmishes causing a considerable number of deaths on both sides. Germany attempted on multiple occasions to incite war between the US and Mexico including the Zimmermann Telegram in January 1917 which proposed a military alliance to allow Mexico to recover Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. Unfortunately for German, British agents intercepted and decoded the telegram.  

 In the midst of the war, Morley traveled about Mexico and Central America using his archaeological credentials to gain unfettered access. He covered nearly 2000 miles along the coastline of Central America in search of secret German submarine bases. His espionage activities remained a secret until discovered by researchers many years later.

 Interesting Fact: Morley more than any other individual is credited with being the inspiration for Indiana Jones.

 The Discovery

A Hefeweizen which translates to yeast wheat is a German-style wheat beer. It originated in the 1520's in the southern area of Bavaria, Germany. Generally made with a ratio of 50% wheat to 50% barley and left unfiltered, this style derives much of its character from its distinctive yeast which delivers the phenols of banana, clove, and notes of bubblegum or apples. Hefeweizen’s typically have minimal hop bitterness and a moderate level of alcohol. It’s a crisp, drinkable ale that ‘s a favorite during the summer months.
