The story of our Arecibo Coffee Blonde starts in the mountains of Puerto Rico, where the Arecibo telescope was built into a sinkhole 1963 and used for radar astronomy, radio astronomy and as part of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program. It was the largest single-aperture telescope for 53 years until surpassed by the 500 meter FAST telescope in China. Decommissioned in November 2019, the telescope suffered significant structural damage when its 900-ton suspended instrument platform collapsed on the dish on December 1st , 2020. Owned by the National Science Foundation (NSF), local sentiment is to rebuild the telescope. The Puerto Rican government has allocated $8 million dollars although it would require significantly more funding to rebuild. Our Arecibo Coffee Blonde was brewed with coffee beans sourced from Café El Coqui from the mountainous area of San Sebastian – close to the town of Arecibo where the iconic Arecibo Observatory is located. This brew rings with clarity – a fantastic beer in the waning hours of the workday.
