5 Key Takeaways from Brew Day @ Deutsche Beverage Tech

1.     Collaborative Brew Days epitomize the craft beer spirit

Recently, we were honored and humbled to be the guest brewery at a Brew Day event at Deutsche Beverage Technology at their headquarters in Charlotte, NC. We shared the brew stand with our new partner, Deutsche, and spent the day brewing a Pale Ale. This truly epitomizes what the spirit of craft beer is about: camaraderie and cooperation.

Collaborative brews typically follow the same formula. At the end of the day, we all want to make great beer, help each other out, and talk about the next batch. It never gets old, even for someone like DG, our Director of Brewing, who has a couple decades of experience.  He still continues to learn a thing or two at each one as we might get to see a slightly different procedure, theory, or brewing trick.  So, at Lost Worlds, we will continue to practice in this spirit of cooperation with fellow brewers from all over. We’re already working on a few more of these "collabs" with some very talented brewers. We'll do some at our brewery and we'll travel to other breweries too.  Stay tuned…

2.     The craft community is genuinely excited to welcome newcomers

At the end of the day, we all want each other to make great beer and succeed. We all start somewhere and grow, and it's great to have this is our industry. Thanks to DG (with 23 years on the brew clock) we’re not starting from scratch.  But, from a new brewery perspective, we are indeed.  It takes time to build a following, gain that word-of mouth advocacy that comes from making great beer, and have people want to spend time in our tap room and biergarten.  Thanks for welcoming us in with a fists full of mugs and a hug.

3.     The equipment you use is equally as important as the recipe

When we decided to partner with Deutsche Beverage Technology to provide our brewing equipment, it began as a true partnership.  We have been involved in the design and setup phases, and they will continue to support us after we start brewing. There are many different facets that can make beer from recipes and ingredients, from the brewers and their practices and procedures, to the equipment itself. At the end of the day, in choosing a partner, it came down to what the fine folks at Deutsche and their equipment had to offer. We’ve made beer in the most simplistic of equipment, as well as fully automated systems, where the brewer clicks a mouse. They can all make beer, but some of the nuances on each of the different systems can either help or hinder the final product. We are very happy with the "nuances" that the Deutsche system offers and are confident that it will help us make great beer.

4. When brewers show up they bring beer… and BBQ

At an event like the Deutsche Brew Day, when other brewers show up, they love to highlight their own products to other brewers. This a full day of popping bottles, cans, and taps to share their latest pride with their colleagues. We told stories, gave advise, took-in advise, and simply enjoyed the brewery fellowship. Oh yeah, there was some pretty kick ass BBQ, and banana puddin’ that gets  Founder, Dave Hamme, downright giddy. All of this brings a true sense of community that we take with us as we march toward our January 2020 opening.

5.     We're not in this boat alone!

A variety of people take time out of their lives for Brew Day — from people just learning about brewing to people who have successful, establish breweries. We all show up with a common goal: to talk, listen, and learn. And, we managed to make a batch of beer in the process!
