Lost Worlds and Bright Penny Form a Collab and the Result is Refreshing

Since opening in 2020, Lost Worlds has had a handful of beer collaborations – Catawba Brewing, Rock Hill Brewing, Mad Mole and King Canary to name a few. This is a collaborative industry where brewers enjoy sharing recipes and spending a day in the brew house together, sharing tips and talking about the industry trends. Some brewery collaborations originate from long-time friendships and others by happenstance. Our most recent collab is the result of attending Untapped Beer Festival.  After tasting each other’s brews and talking about craft beer all day, our breweries decided to craft a collaboration.

"It's always exciting to brew and talk to other brewers when doing a collaboration beer. It can get you to see things from outside your four walls, and can be a way to potentially learn something new, while making a new beer at the same time," says David Gonzalez, Director of Brewing and Head Brewer at Lost Worlds.

Bright Penny, open for about 2 years, is known for brewing unique styles and rotating their taps often. They suggested doing something classic and fun, and landed on brewing a Saison. Lost Worlds’ Head Brewer, David Gonzalez, and Founder Dave Hamme, traveled to Mebane for day in the Bright Penny Brewhouse in mid-August.

“We decided to take a spin on the classic Saison and add cucumber,” said Lance Furer, who has spent his career in the beer industry and has been brewing for the past 10 years, only six-months at Bright Penny. The brewery has a main location in Mebane and a taproom at the Tanger Outlet Mall nearby. “Saisons are a beautiful style but sometimes come with yeast challenges, so it’s a good one to work through with a collab.”

One hundred and fifty pounds of peeled, seeded and juiced cucumber from a local farm were added during fermentation to give this classic style a unique, seasonal twist. The two breweries combined names and call this tasty brew, Lost Penny.

“We’re excited to offer our guests something new and unique,” says Hamme. “Collaborations are just one way we expand options for our guests and introduce other craft breweries in our state.”
