As we continue to introduce you to our Basecamp beers, here’s an introduction to Trek Porter. This beer was inspired by Meriweather Lewis and William Clark, who set out on an expedition into the unknown with the goal of discovering a Northwest passage – a waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. Over the following two years, their band traveled nearly 8000 miles while enduring challenges including intense weather, hostile Native Americans, continual episodes of food scarcity, and even a foray by the Spanish from New Mexico attempting to imprison their team. The SS Warrimoo was an Australian/New Zealand passenger ship that was launched in 1892 and served as both a passenger liner between Canada and Australia and later as a troop transport in World War 1. In May of 1918, six months before the conflict ended, the Warrimoo met its demise after colliding with the French Warship Catapulte. We have had a blast with this beer collaboration! When we sat down with our old friends at Catawba Brewing, both their Founder, Billy Pyatt, and their Head Brewer, Dave Cobb, They asked us what kind of beer we were thinking of brewing. With our interest in more sessionable styles, and thinking about Catawba's line-up, this is where the fun started — and ours worlds collided. Ultimately, we landed on an APA — one of the first styles that helped the craft revolution get back on track in the 1980s and became a staple in the1990s.
